Birds

Almost 300 species of bird have been recorded in Madagascar. Of these, about 260 occur regularly, 100 are endemic and another 30 are malagasy regional endemics.

The modern avifauna is the result of many 'colonisation events' from Africa, Asia and probably even Australia, Only the recent extinct elephant birds pre-dated the breakup of Gondwanaland; all other bird lineages have colonised the island subsequently.

Several birds have reached the island with human assistance, namely Feral Pigeon,Common Myna, House crow and House Sparrow.
