The modern avifauna is the result of many 'colonisation events' from Africa, Asia and probably even Australia, Only the recent extinct elephant birds pre-dated the breakup of Gondwanaland; all other bird lineages have colonised the island subsequently.
Several birds have reached the island with human assistance, namely Feral Pigeon,Common Myna, House crow and House Sparrow.
